Inside Out
“Man fears nothing more than being touched by something unknown. (…) Wherever we are, we try to avoid being touched by something strange.”
Elias Canetti
The theme of the collection was the conflict between feeling beauty and pleasurable disgust. The idea originated during a journey on the London tube: “There was a woman in front of me with a single black hair on her white jacket. I was about to remove the hair, but then I realized what I was doing. It was only at the last moment that I was able to pull myself together. The fear of intruding on the private space that revolves around a person like a bubble was too great.”
On one hand, viewers are attracted by the beauty of the hair but on the other hand they feel that something is not right. They develop a combination of wanting to touch the piece of clothing and, at the same time, they are afraid of touching it and invading the wearer’s private space. The collection plays with these ambiguous feelings, and challenges both the viewer and the wearer.
